Four things you can do before selling your house

Get your house ready to sell with these tips.

  1. Research the local housing market

    • Do research on the value of your house through Realtor.com

    • Pay attention to various square footage, features, the location, and think about how these compare to your house.

  2. Avoid over-improving your house with costly renovations. Try these improvements

    • Do a deep clean

    • Declutter your house

    • Depersonalize your house

    • Call a handyman to fix leaky faucets, running toilets, broken appliances, locks, cracks in walls, etc.

    • Paint your walls, if you have bright colours. Try painting them with neutral colours (light grays, whites, etc.). These help the space appear larger, and show a blank slate to potential buyers.

  3. Find a listing agent

    • Enlisting a professional real estate agent is recommended. Use Realtor.com or word-of-mouth recommendations.

    • A good realtor should have a good deal of marketing strategies to stir up interest in your house.

  4. Be flexible with showings

    • Keep your house as clean as possible, and have a quick place to dump clutter when needed, such as an outdoor shed, car, or public storage unit.

  5. Take high-quality photos

    • Given that potential buyers search for homes online, you can now snap high—quality, and professional pictures of your clean and staged abode. Remember, a realtor should be able to help you do this. Make sure to ask them when you interview them for the job.
